What is a Horoscope?
🔭 Horoscope is a chart or diagram (astrological) that represents the planetary positions of a particular point in time, and most often used to show these positions of the time of a person’s birth. This gives a “map” of the sky and how the planetary energies will have influence on that person.
The etymology of Horoscope from Greek (source):
- hōra (ὥρα) = “hour” or “time”
- skopos (σκοπός) = “watcher” or “observer”
The Hellenistic view of the word is more technical: It indicates the location by sign and degree of horizon which is used to signify the Ascendant/Rising degree which is then ultimately used to set up the house system for that point in time from the location in which it was observed.
“Watcher of the Hour” because the degree on the Eastern Horizon changes about every 4 minutes, the need to watch the sky during the event was critical for precise calculations.
