The Planet or planets that rule our charts say a lot about what energies will be navigating our lives and influence our personalities, and propensities.
Often the chart ruler is the ruler of our rising sign, however this is not always the case. If we have multiple planets in one sign that could become the dominate energy that we feel and display in our lives.
Other factors that go into determining whose energies will dominate the chart are things like dignity of a planet which means the condition of the planet in our chart, if it is a sign where it is at home or in an adversary’s sign or if it is in a tough aspect with Saturn who may be limiting its expression.
Say a person whose ruling planet is engaged in difficult aspects from Saturn may restrict the expression of the ruler until Saturn and the planet have worked out their differences.
If the ruling planet is in a hard aspect to Mars, then there could be a fight about whose expression will win, Mars wants to be first and so does the ruling planet so you may find some conflicts until they can learn to work together.
Say you have a Sagittarius rising but Jupiter is in Capricorn and getting a square from Saturn, this puts Jupiter at a disadvantage and stifles his ability to act as the greater benefic.
But perhaps you have the Moon and Sun in Taurus, the Moon is exalted in Taurus and having both of the luminaries (our souls guiding lights) in Taurus gives its ruler, Venus incredible strength to act and influence so that in a chart without any other negating factors would put Venus in an excellent position to be the ruler of the nativity (chart) and therefore she will be navigating energetic force and the biggest influence in the chart over the personality and propensities.
